Food and Drink exhibition – contributions needed

Museum Appeal 06 2023

Following on from last years very succesful “Shipyard memories and memorabilia” South Shields Museum needs your help for their next big exhibition.

Food and drink is the new theme for the exhibition due to open in June 2023. The exhibition will chart the story of food and drink across South Tyneside, from traditional home-cooked grub of yesteryear, to the origins of some of the Borough’s most iconic eateries, including Colman’s fish and chips, Dixons pork butchers and Minchella & Co ice cream.

Museum curator, Adam Bell, would like locals to contribute their food and drink memories, to feature in the new exhibition, he’s also on the hunt for anything that could be borrowed to display, such as old photos, menus, family recipe books and the like.

“I’d also love to hear memories of the many small family shops that once proliferated, in the days before the big supermarkets came to dominate, from butchers and grocers, to bakers, confectioners, and more.”

Adam Bell, South Shields Museum Curator
