Our Wednesday Men’s group have definitely been out and about
Haircuts but not 100

As part of Age Concern’s Connect 2 project, the Wednesday Men’s Group visited The Plug Barbers for their weekly social. We approached the owner Shaun Rundle several weeks ago and asked if he would be willing to hold the weekly session in the shop.
Shaun was more than happy to work with Age Concern and offered to cut the men’s hair for free. He and his colleague Jude were warm and welcoming to the men, creating a calm and comfortable atmosphere where they could talk openly despite the wide range of ages. The visit coincided with Men’s Mental Health Week (13th – 19th June) and they were joined by George Donnelly, a volunteer with Andy’s Man Club, who gave an insight into what the organisation offers to men in the local area. They meet every Monday night, 7pm at Souter Lighthouse.
The men wanted to pay towards their haircuts and this was given to Shaun who had previously agreed to donate any money raised back to Age Concern. In total £43.10 was generously handed over.
The group looked very dapper after their haircuts and were all in agreement they would definitely go back to The Plug.
A huge thank you to Shaun and Jude for their kindness and thanks to George for coming along and having a chat.
There will be grub

Some of the Men’s Group joined others at the STEP project (Hospitality and Hope) for the first of their Cooking on a Budget course.
The course runs for four weeks and is led by Kerry Bell. The group were given ingredients for vegetable lasagne and shown how to prepare them, with a little assistance. Each week the menu changes and the meals prepared are to feed a family of four for under £5.00.
We look forward to seeing some of the finished meals. (Editors’ Note … seeing not eating!)
Our Monthly Gardening Club were also out

On the 11th of June our gardening group visited Birkheads Secret Gardens and Nursery at Sunniside. It was the groups first trip out this year and everyone had a lovely time. The owners Christine and Michael Liddle, looked after the members, telling them about the plants and flowers within the gardens and passing on their experience. We visited the coffee shop after the walk around and can highly recommend the cheese scones
