START – South Tyneside’s Advocacy Resource Team

This service is available for older people who may have experienced a significant life event or need support to cope with issues that can arise in later life, which can have a dramatic impact on their day-to-day living.

Care Navigators with START provide free, confidential and impartial information, advice and advocacy to support older people.

They will:
• Take the time you need to listen
• Help you to access information and services
• Support you to make sure your concerns are addressed
• Talk about options available to you to achieve what you need
• Complete forms for benefits, housing and care services
• Speak to organisations and agencies to help you to access services

They can provide help and support in all of the following circumstances:
• After a partner has died
• After separating from a partner
• To arrange home care
• To access exercise groups to improve health and wellbeing
• To claim benefits
• To fill in forms
• To access falls prevention equipment
• To make end of life arrangements
• To arrange care or carer assessment
• When approaching retirement
• When becoming a carer
• To cope on a reduced budget or manage debts

For you or someone you know they can:
• Get the services needed to remain independent and active
• Access services and support under the Care Act
• Claim their full benefit entitlement
• Discuss whether they should stay in their own home or move to other accommodation
• Find someone who can help following a life event
